Breed registry

 

   The native breeds of pigs, including Złotnicka Spotted and Złotnicka White pig, are a construct of Polish scientists. They are a testimony to the material culture of the Nation and as such should be protected. Research work on progenitors of both breeds began shortly after the end of World War II, and were based on primitive hybrids of the great Polish long-eared (from the Vilnius region of Poland) and the Polish Short-Eared (Sharp-Eared) with a predominance of Long-Eared and an admixture of great English Whites. This breeding work was initiated thanks to Professor Stefan Alexandrowicz from the University of Agriculture in Poznań (current University of Life Sciences in Poznań). Continuers of Złotnicka breeds development in the following decades were prof. Aleksandrowicz’s students, prof. Mieczysław Ratajszczak and prof. Janusz.T. Buczyński.

Thanks to prof. Buczyński, on April 11, 2000 the University of Agriculture in Poznań (currently Poznań University of Life Sciences), was authorized by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to keep breeding books for the Złotnicka Spotted pigs. Thus, breeding was officially in the charge of the University, from where it began. After two years, on June 11, 2002, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development entrusted the Agricultural Property Agency in Poznań with the evaluation of performance of Złotnicka Spotted pigs
