The Department of Biotechnology and Food Microbiology has a strong, direct and documented impact on the national economy and the society. Strong collaboration with national industrial entities working in biotechnology, food and feed production, and environmental protection sectors is one of our most important priorities. The impact is realized by implementation of inventions into industrial practice and joint research projects conducted in part in PULS laboratories and in part in the industry. The collaboration can be well exemplified by the outcomes of the research project “Development of eubiotic preparations for farm animals” (contract no. PBS1/A8/10/2012) executed in a consortium of two scientific institutions from Poznan (incl. PULS) and a private sector company JHJ sp. z o.o. from Nowa Wieś. As a result of the conducted research, five multi-strain eubiotic preparations were developed, which exert a positive impact on the efficiency of animal production by improving feed conversion and significantly reducing animal morbidity. The results were described in four inventions protected by Polish patent law and three scientific publications. The developed preparations were commercialized in accordance with the quotations and offers prepared by the Center for Innovation and Technology Transfer of the Poznan University of Life Sciences. The above-mentioned technologies and preparations were purchased by a Polish company producing probiotics for humans, with over 15% share in the market of these products.

Another area of our activity with direct impact on society is realized by regular organization of workshops, displays and lectures for local education institutions of different levels. We are also involved in annually open held events, like the European Researchers’ Night, of known broad impact on the society beyond academia and scholars.
